I’ve started a monthly email newsletter collecting my writing, some of the things I’m reading, and a few other odds and ends. You can subscribe here.
What I wrote
- Last month was so busy I forgot to share this article! Applied mathematicians are exploring the possibility of controlling mosquito-borne disease outbreaks by giving the mosquitoes their own disease outbreaks. I wrote about it for Math Horizons. If you are not a member of the Mathematical Association of America or subscriber to Math Horizons, you can try this link. If you are still having trouble accessing it, let me know, and I’ll get it to you.
- On our podcast My Favorite Theorem, Kevin Knudson and I talked with Ursula Whitcher (transcript/show notes) about the physics-inspired mathematical field called mirror symmetry and with Suresh Venkatasubramanian (transcript/show notes) about understanding potential sources of error and bias in computer science.
- I love the “humans are adorable” genre of Tumblr posts, and I made a mathematics-inspired contribution. It’s so cute that there are tens of thousands of math Ph.D.s running around the country, and not one of us knows whether π+e is rational or irrational!
- I am continuing to listen to a lot of music by women composers, and it is bringing me much joy. This month I shared music by Bosba Panh, Pamela Z, Alissa Firsova, and Ellen Reid, whose opera p r i s m just won the Pulitzer Prize for music.
