I’ve started a monthly email newsletter collecting my writing, some of the things I’m reading, and a few other odds and ends. You can subscribe here.
What I wrote
- If you missed Thirdsday this year, no worries: you can file this post away for the next time January third is on a Thursday, which, barring major calendrical reforms, will be in 2030.
- On our podcast My Favorite Theorem Kevin Knudson and I talked with Skip Garibaldi about the unknowability of the number line and Nira Chamberlain about the chaotic system that is the weather.
- On the Lathisms podcast featuring interviews with Hispanic and Latinx mathematicians, you can now hear from Santiago Schnell, Tatiana Toro, and Rosa Orellana. Find episodes here.
- Even kids can understand that algorithms can be biased. I wrote this article about algorithmic bias and what algorithm designers can do to combat it a couple years ago for a children’s science magazine, but it seemed relevant again after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks on the subject got some press.
